PROMOTING COMPARATIVE QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION IN EUROPE

PROMINSTAT is a research project funded under the 6th Framework Programme. It compiles meta-information on statistical datasets on migration, integration and discrimination in 29 European Countries (EU27 plus Norway and Switzerland).

Through country reports and a series of comparative studies on particular topics of datacollection PROMINSTAT provides in-depth analyses of the scope, quality and comparability of statistical data collection on migration in a wide range of thematic fields, including population stocks and general demographic characteristics, migration flows, residence permits, acquisition and loss of citizenship, asylum seekers and refugees, irregular migration, employment, income, transfers and social benefits, housing and residental patterns, health and access to healthcare, education, family and household, political participation and crime and justice. The main aim of PROMINSTAT is to promote comparative quantitative research on migration, integration and discrimination in Europe, to enhance the knowledge base on statistical data collection in this field and thus to contribute to the improvement of statistics on migration, integration and discrimination.

Publication of new thematic papers [01/12/10]

Three new comparative thematic papers have been published in the PROMINSTAT Working Papers Series. Working Paper No. 10, authored by August Gächter, deals with data needs and data availability for discrimination research in Europe (WP10). Working Paper No. 11, by Michel Poulain and Anne Herm, analyses the availability of statistics on population stocks relevant to international migration (WP11). Working Paper No. 15, drafted by David Reichel, analyses data needs for and opportunities to measuring determinants and consequences of citizenship acquisition in Europe (WP15).

Publication of Final Report [4/8/2010]

The PROMINSTAT Final Report has been published. The report includes a project overview, a description of the institutional framework of data collection, a description of the evolution of the (inter-)national data collection systems, an analysis of different types of data sources and its availability throughout Europe, a gaps and needs analysis as well as recommendations for improving the data situation in Europe. In addition, the report includes summaries of the main results of the thematic studies which have been prepared in the framework of the Prominstat project and a text box on remittances data.

Launch of the  Thematic Working Paper Series [7/5/2010]

We are pleased to announce the publication of the first set of altogether 16 thematic working papers on different fields and aspects of statistical data collection on migration, integration and discrimination.

The studies so far published include an overview paper on statistical data collection on migration, integration and discrimination in Europe (WP01), an analysis of employment data (WP02), a paper on the measurement of integration (WP03), an analysis of data on migration flows (WP04), an analysis of work permit data (WP05), a study on measuring housing and residential patterns (WP06), a study on  data on the legal status of immigrants (WP07), a paper on measuring political participation (WP08) and one paper on data concerning migration and health issues (WP09).

Altogether, 16 studies are currently planned (for the complete list of thematic studies click here).

Building on the information contained in the meta-database as well as on the country reports, the thematic studies explore the availability, comparability and quality of statistical data in specific fields. In addition, the thematic studies assess the possibilities for and limitations on comparative research and  provide recommendations how the quantitative knowledge can be improved. Launch of the PROMINSTAT database and country reports [22/7/2009]

We are pleased to announce the launch of the online database and the related publication of country reports on national data collection systems

The online database includes more than 1,200 descriptions of datasets providing information on: type of dataset, coverage, methodology of data collection, accessibility of data and variables contained in the datasets.

The country reports complement the database by systematically describing national data collection systems in the countries covered by the project.
